OBTAINING COPIES OF YOUR PERSONAL CREDIT REPORTS

Obtaining your credit report from the three major credit reporting agencies is simple. As of this writing, under federal law, you have one of two ways to obtain your credit reports.

1. To obtain a FREE copy of one or more of your reports, you must have been rejected for credit within the last thirty days.

You will have received a letter from your creditor stating the reasons for your denial and it will also list the credit bureau(s) used to evaluate your credit worthiness.  You must respond to those credit bureaus within 30 days in writing and request a copy of your report. When possible, attach a copy of the denial letter. (See example letter of request under Appendix 4.)

2. If you have not been denied credit within the last thirty days you must purchase your copies of your credit report(s). The fees will vary from state to state, as the fees are regulated by each state.  (See example letter of request under Appendix 4.)

The following addresses are for the national headquarters of the three major credit bureaus.  These are the addresses you write to request copies of your credit reports.  (Remember to send these requests via CERTIFIED mail and to keep copies of all correspondence.)
